TWD - Vanilla Ice Cream

Because this is the year that I bought my ice cream maker, I've been calling this the Summer of Ice Cream. Really, for me, every summer is all about ice cream.

Chocolate chocolate chip ice cream. It's what I wait for every summer. Heading to the local store where a mom and pop shop has been making their own ice cream forever. It's creamy, it's crunchy, it's chocolatey. Everything my palate craves. Vanilla? On pie, sure. In a cone, never.

This week thanks to Lynne of
Cafe Lynny Lu
I'm faced with my own vanilla challenge.

I whisk, I heat, I stir, all the while wondering what embellishments I must to add to make this Plain Jane ice cream desirable. Then the spoon comes out of the pot steeped in the the aroma of warm vanilla beans. Hmm...

I churn. Thickening cream climbs up the beaters. I taste. Oh. Oh! So, this is vanilla. I didn't know.

So, here's vanilla ice cream. I couldn't resist adding the dark chocolate disks I'd already bought. Then for colour and contrasting taste, I sprinkled on some Goji berries.

Later in the week, I craved more. This time I made buttered pecans and Dorie's Caramel Sauce and swirled it into the last moments of the churning. Bitter and sweet. Now I understand vanilla.

  2. Mmm. Both versions sound fabulous. I've been eating my vanilla ice cream plain, but I think I still have some caramel hiding in the back of my fridge...

  9. With the goji berries, can we count this vanilla ice cream as health food? ;)

I hear you... I used to dismiss vanilla ice cream as too plain to eat by itself. Delicious homemade versions like this changed my mind.

    Beautiful job!

  32. Oooh, both versions look terrific! I love the colors in the first picture. I'm not a huge fan of eating vanilla ice cream by itself but sometimes it hits the spot. No matter what, any homemade ice cream is better than store bought in my opinion :)
