TWD - Mrs. Vogel's Scherben
Scherben - it means fried dough cookies. Fried dough cookies are delicious!
Like many who attempted this recipe this week, when I saw the word fried, I shuddered. Having recently come through Hanukkah, the smell of cooking oil and fried potato pancakes stills lingers in my kitchen curtains, in my rug, in my hair. Could I make this recipe without repeating the stinky outcome?
Scherben is the easiest of recipes. After all, it's simply fried dough. You make a simple dough, roll it out, cut strips, chill and fry. The recipe claims this must be done in 4" of oil. I'm not sure why. I used an inch of oil and the cookies fried up very nicely at twenty seconds per side.
They were delicious! I ate the lion's share, so I'm not sure if I'd make them again. Maybe once a year. Like potato pancakes.
Here's the best part, you now must go to Teanna's wonderful blog Spork or Foon? and enjoy her hilarious photo essay about making these cookies.
