TWD - Mrs. Vogel's Scherben

Scherben - it means fried dough cookies. Fried dough cookies are delicious!

Like many who attempted this recipe this week, when I saw the word fried, I shuddered. Having recently come through Hanukkah, the smell of cooking oil and fried potato pancakes stills lingers in my kitchen curtains, in my rug, in my hair. Could I make this recipe without repeating the stinky outcome?

Scherben is the easiest of recipes. After all, it's simply fried dough. You make a simple dough, roll it out, cut strips, chill and fry. The recipe claims this must be done in 4" of oil. I'm not sure why. I used an inch of oil and the cookies fried up very nicely at twenty seconds per side.

They were delicious! I ate the lion's share, so I'm not sure if I'd make them again. Maybe once a year. Like potato pancakes.

Here's the best part, you now must go to Teanna's wonderful blog Spork or Foon? and enjoy her hilarious photo essay about making these cookies.

  1. Hahahah I am so glad that you made these despite the fear of oil smell in the hair! Sadly, when I chose these, I did not know about any lingering oil smell - I have never fried anything before! What a stench! Thanks for frying along with me this week!

  2. Yep, I'm with you, fried goodness. Not to be experienced more than a couple times a year. I, however, did not have to eat the lion's share as the GUYS were eating them as fast as I was frying them and dusting them with powdered sugar. Yours look pretty just floating about...and I am usually not a fan of frying anything...making an exception in this case!

  3. It's great to know that these can be fried in less than 4" of oil. I'd never fried anything before, and as I was pouring the oil, I thought it was a lot of oil to use. I love your snowy powdered sugar scherben outside with the snow as a backdrop.

And dang, they're addictive! Love your photo. Is that snow on the scherben or powdered sugar? ;)

  10. I'm so glad to see that you fried these in a small amount of oil. I always feel so wasteful when I'm glug-glugging a huge amount of oil into a pot for frying. Less oil works fine. This is good to know!

  26. I didn't want to make these because I escaped making latkes at my house this year and there is NO oil smell. Well, that and they didn't appeal to me. Yours look great! I made cake. Mmmmm.

  27. I didn't use that much oil either and they worked out fine. I probably won't make them too ofter, but only because I'd eat them all if I did! Yours look great with all that powdered sugar.
